CURIOUS ABOUT REFORMER PILATES BUT NOT SURE WHERE TO START? YOU'VE COME TO THE RIGHT PLACE!
Here are some handy tips to help you feel confident and comfortable stepping into the studio for your very first class. Once you book your first session, you’ll also receive a studio-specific FAQ email with everything you need to know. Our team of down-to-earth instructors are ready to welcome you, learn your name and cheer you on!
Reformer Pilates is a full-body workout performed on a machine called a Reformer - originally invented by Joseph Pilates over 100 years ago! The Reformer is a bed-like frame with springs, a moving carriage, footbar, and straps. These features work together to provide smooth, adjustable resistance that both challenges your muscles and supports your body through a wide range of motion.
There are many different styles of Pilates — from Classical to Contemporary to Clinical/Rehab. At Movement Pilates, we teach a more 'modern, group fitness' style inspired by traditional Pilates and blended with evidence-based movement principles. Think upbeat, fun, dynamic, and ever-evolving! Every class is intentionally designed to improve your strength/endurance, mobility, balance, and coordination so you can feel better, move better, and thrive in everyday life.
Step into our studio and enjoy a full-body workout on our sleek Allegro Reformers. Our knowledgeable, friendly team is here to guide you every step of the way – no TV screens or pre-set routines – just purposeful programming tailored to the room.
Each 45-minute class follows a simple structure: - A 10-minute warm-up lying on your back - A 30-minute block of functional, full-body strength and mobility work - A dreamy 5-minute cool down and stretch
You’ll move through exercises that target all major muscle groups through their full range of motion, while sprinkling in the magic of Pilates - think balance, coordination, mindfulness... & sometimes a bit of cardio too! Each class includes both Level 1 (beginner-friendly) and Level 2 (intermediate) spring options, plus extra spicy layers and progressions so you can pick & choose the level of intensity.
Need a breather? No problem. Take a moment and jump back in when you’re ready. Our instructors are here to guide you - helping you explore movement in a way that feels good, while encouraging you to challenge yourself & reach your goals.
- We want you to be as comfortable as possible during your class, so we recommend wearing clothes that allow you to move freely. Your favourite activewear is great!
- Please bring your drink bottle to stay hydrated - to minimise our ecological footprint we do not provide plastic drinking cups.
- Feel free to bring a sweat towel if you wish.
- We sell MoveActive Reformer Mats in studio for $79. These are not compulsory, but they do make your experience just a little more luxe!
For hygiene and safety, grip socks must be worn during all classes. Don’t have a pair? No worries - we have plenty available to purchase in-studio for $25 (cash or card on file). There’s a great range of sizes, colours, and styles to choose from. Already own a pair of trampoline or hospital grip socks? Perfect, those work great too! Just bring them along.
Please arrive 10 minutes early so you have plenty of time to settle in, meet your instructor, and get familiar with the space.
When you arrive:
Pop your shoes on the rack
Sign in at the front desk - your instructor will be expecting you!
Tuck your belongings in a cubby
Your instructor will give you a quick tour (including bathrooms and cubbies), chat with you about any injuries or goals, and set you up on a Reformer in the center of the room - so you’ll have plenty of people around to follow along with. They’ll chat you through the machine and what to expect in class.
It’s all about making sure you feel comfortable and confident before we get moving. We start classes right on time, so please don’t be late - we’d hate for you to miss the intro!
Our New Mover Intro Offer gives you 6 classes in 21 days for just $90 - the perfect way to dip your toes into Reformer Pilates and experience what Movement Pilates is all about. Whether you're brand new or getting back into it, this offer gives you the chance to explore our classes, meet our friendly instructors, and discover how good movement can feel.
However, if you’re feeling a bit unsure, working with an injury, or would simply prefer a more personalised introduction, a Private Session (solo or duet) can be a great way to start. More information about Private Sessions can be found here.
Yes - absolutely! As long as you’ve been cleared to exercise by your GP, OB, or lead maternity carer (LMC), you’re welcome to join our All Levels group classes. These classes include supportive props and offer plenty of modifications to help you move safely and confidently throughout pregnancy and beyond. (Please note: our Level Up classes are not suitable during pregnancy or early postpartum recovery.)
However, if you’re brand new to Reformer Pilates, we recommend starting with a private session so we can walk you through the equipment and explore any specific modifications you may need.
When purchasing your pass or creating your account profile, please indicate how many weeks pregnant you are and your due date - this will automatically trigger an email with everything you need to know about safely moving with us while pregnant.
We generally welcome postpartum clients back into our group classes from around 6 weeks post-vaginal birth or 12 weeks post-Caesarean, provided you’ve been cleared to exercise by your GP, midwife, or women’s health physio.
Please note: our group classes are fitness-based and not designed as clinical or rehabilitation Pilates sessions.
No worries - we’ve got you! 💛 We know starting something new can feel a little daunting, so we’ve put together a helpful FAQ page to answer all your questions and help you feel comfortable before your first class.
